Pot-Time Town

“It will lead our grandchildren to perdition.”
Elderly resident of Rasquera, Spain

The little town of Rasquera, Spain (population 900) has a big problem: it’s over $1 million in debt. But town leaders think they’ve smoked out a solution: marijuana. And that has some folks fuming.

The Rasquera town council voted last month to let 17 acres of its public land go to weed. Literally. In exchange, a cannabis association will pay the town $66,000 per month in rent. The dough from the dope will pay off the town’s debt within two years. And in Spain, it’s all perfectly legal.

But to some townspeople, just because it’s legal doesn’t make it right. They don’t want to become known as the whacky tobaccy capital of Spain.

The mayor says folks should chill out. The marijuana farm will not only fill the city’s coffers, but it will provide 40 jobs in this area where unemployment is 23 percent.

Still, town leaders need to tread carefully. What today looks like pot at the end of a rainbow could turn out tomorrow to be nothing but fool’s gold.
