President McNugget

“I saw this portrait of George Washington staring back at me.”

Rebekah Speight cannot tell a lie. Cleaning up after her kids at a McDonald’s three years ago, the Dakota City, Nebraska (population 1,908) mom looked down at one of their Chicken McNuggets and saw George Washington looking back. The McNugget was the spitting image of Washington’s profile—no lie.

Ms. Speight took the presidential McNugget home to show family and friends, and then put it away in the freezer, not giving it much thought over the years. That is, until last month. Inspired by a sermon at church, Ms. Speight decided to put the novelty McNugget on eBay to raise money to send children to church camp.

Ms. Speight’s unusual offering caught the attention from media as far away as Germany and attracted a top bid of $8,100. Sadly, the winning bidder chickened out and withdrew the offer. Instead of crying “fowl,” Ms. Speight is forging ahead and has contacted the person with the next highest bid, $8,000. If details can be worked out, it’ll be a happy ending for a Happy Meal head of state.
